Getting there

By air

Melbourne Airport (MEL), also known as Tullamarine, is the main international airport, located approximately 23 km northwest of the city center. It serves direct flights from major cities across Asia, the Middle East, North America, and the Pacific. Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and numerous international carriers operate from Tullamarine.

From the airport

SkyBus operates an express shuttle between Melbourne Airport and the city center (Southern Cross Station), running approximately every 10 minutes during the day. The journey takes about 30 minutes and costs approximately $20 AUD one way. Taxis and ride-share services (Uber, Didi) are also available from the airport and cost approximately $55–70 AUD to the CBD.

Avalon Airport

Some domestic and budget carriers (notably Jetstar) use Avalon Airport (AVV), located approximately 55 km southwest of Melbourne. SkyBus also services Avalon, but the journey to the city is longer (approximately 50 minutes).

Tip

Get a Myki card (Melbourne's transit card) at the airport or at any train station. It works on all trams, trains, and buses across Melbourne and is required for public transport — cash is not accepted on board.

Accommodation

Melbourne offers a wide range of accommodation. Hotels in the CBD and Carlton are the most convenient for The Spot, which is easily reached by tram or on foot from the city centre.

Local transportation

Trams

Melbourne has the largest tram network in the world. Trams run frequently throughout the city and are the easiest way to reach the University of Melbourne from the CBD. Routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, and 72 all stop near the university. The CBD and surrounding inner suburbs have a Free Tram Zone — travel within this zone requires no ticket.

Trains

Melbourne's suburban train network connects the city to outer suburbs and regional areas. The closest train stations to the university are Melbourne Central and Flagstaff, both a short tram ride or 15–20 minute walk from campus.

Ride-share & taxis

Uber and Didi are widely available. Taxis can be hailed on the street or booked via the 13CABS app. Rides within the inner city typically cost $10–20 AUD.

Walking & cycling

The University of Melbourne is a comfortable 20–25 minute walk from the CBD through Carlton, one of Melbourne's most charming neighbourhoods. Melbourne Bike Share stations are located around the campus and CBD.

Meals

Conference registration includes lunches and a conference dinner. Details about the dinner venue will be communicated to registered participants.

Melbourne is widely considered Australia's food capital, with an exceptional café culture and diverse restaurant scene. Lygon Street (a short walk from campus) is Melbourne's historic Italian dining strip. The CBD laneways are famous for hidden cafés, bars, and restaurants. Carlton, Fitzroy, and Collingwood — all within a few tram stops — offer everything from Vietnamese pho to contemporary Australian cuisine.

Post-conference activity

Winery excursion

A post-conference winery excursion is being organized for participants. Victoria is home to some of Australia's finest wine regions, with the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula both within easy reach of Melbourne.

The Yarra Valley, approximately one hour northeast of Melbourne, is renowned for its cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines. The Mornington Peninsula, about one hour south, offers a stunning coastal setting with cellar doors, artisan producers, and ocean views.

The excursion will include wine tastings, a vineyard lunch, and transport to and from Melbourne. Further details about the specific winery, date, and logistics will be communicated to registered participants.

Tip

If you plan to extend your stay, consider spending an extra day exploring the Great Ocean Road (2–3 hours west of Melbourne), one of the world's most scenic coastal drives, featuring the Twelve Apostles rock formations.
